Purchase of Christian captives from the Barbary States

Monks paying to pirates to buy and free Christian captives. This is a 17th Century illustration and the author is unknown. It was used a cover image on Wolfgang Kaiser's "Le Commerce des Captifs" During the 17th century, Barbary pirates and English pirates were in a collaboration against Catholic shipping around Mediterranean.

FA Cup is one of the most popular football competitions in the world. And the first final was played on 16 March 1872 at Kennington Oval in London, between Wanderers and Royal Engineers. There were 2,000 football fans around the pitch to watch the game live. Wanderers won the match 1 - 0. The winning Wanderers team received the trophy at a special reception at the Pall Mall Restaurant. This is the only photograph of The Royal Engineers pictured in 1872. Hejaz Train Line From Damascus to Medina A rabic Map of Hejaz Railway that ran from Damascus to Medina, through the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia, with a branch line to Haifa . Hejaz Train Line was a part of the Ottoman railway network and was built to extend the line from the Istanbul beyond Damascus to the holy city of Mecca. The most known historical railway Opened in 1908 Track length: 1,320 km (820 mi)

The Great Game. British Lion and Russian Bear British Empire and Russian Empire were trying to control Central Asia and Afghanistan was one of the most important places of this conflict. This cartoon by Sir John Tenniel ( English illustrator, graphic humourist and political cartoonist ) tells us about the situation of the local rulers during "The Great Game" years. Here we see the Afghan Emir Sheikh Ali Khan with his "friends" Russia and Great Britain . It was published in Punch magazine, 30 November, 1878

Those who have been interested in yoga for a while or longer already knew about this name. " Swami Vivekananda " was in India and lived between 1863-1902. He was an Indian Hindu monk and chief disciple of the 19th-century saint Ramakrishna. He was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He is credited with raising interfaith awareness, bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century.

What is Budhagupta Stone? Budhagupta was a Gupta emperor. He had close ties with the rulers of Kannauj kingdom and together they sought to rule the Huns out of the fertile plains of Northern India. This is a replica of Buddhagupta stone ( the original one was found in Seberang Perai, Malaysia and is kept in the National Museum, Calcutta, India ) on display at the National History Museum, Kuala Lumpur. The inscription refers to the reign of Budhagupta and it is dated A.D. 484-485.

A beautiful portrait of a young Berber woman from Tunisa This photo was taken in 1905 by Rudolf Franz Lehnert. It clearly shows the traditional tattoos and jewellery of young Berber women of North Africa in early 1900s.

Seen through the photographs of Francis Bedford (1815-94), the first photographer to travel on a royal tour, it explores the cultural and political significance Victorian Britain attached to the region, which was then as complex and contested as it remains today. The tour took the Prince to Egypt, Palestine and the Holy Land, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece where he met rulers, politicians and other notable figures, and travelled in a manner not associated with royalty – by horse and camping out in tents. Norwegian Village Girls 1890 This photograph was taken in Jølster, Norway 130 years ago. A beautiful black & white photograph of Axel Lindahl, a Swedish photographer, tells us alot about how Norwegian village girls looked like in the end of 1800's. Oat was one of the most important food for Scandinavian peoples. And the farmers were harvesting it by hand.
